Port Stephens has one of the largest and most diverse estuary systems in NSW. On the days when the bay is too choppy for comfort — and August delivers plenty of those days — charter boats and experienced local anglers retreat into the Tilligerry, Myall and Karuah river systems to continue fishing in protected waters. This isn't second-best fishing. It's smart fishing.
The Tilligerry system specifically offers weed beds, sandbars, mudflats, rock walls, deep holes and channel drop-offs that create a dynamic, year-round fishery right on your doorstep if you're launching from Lemon Tree Passage. You are, quite literally, on top of some of the best estuary fishing in the region. Use it.
One productive run right now: launch at Lemon Tree Passage, work the north end of Fenninghams Island along the shoreline for flathead on plastics, then move to the western side of One Tree and Shag Island for trumpeter whiting. On the way back, drop into the deep holes in the main Tilligerry channel for mulloway on the tide change.
That's a full day session without leaving the estuary system. "tight-Lines"
