May and June are prime months for dusky flathead around Lemon Tree Passage and the Tilligerry Peninsula. As water temperatures cool, flathead gather along sandy drop-offs, drains, weed edges, and channels waiting to ambush bait pushed by the tide. The key to success is slowing down your presentation and fishing the movement of the water.
The best areas include the Lemon Tree Passage channel edges, oyster lease drop-offs, Tanilba Bay flats, Mallabula shallows, and gutters leading toward Soldiers Point and Fame Cove. Focus especially on the last half of the run-out tide and the first couple of hours of the incoming tide when baitfish are concentrated.
Ufish brined baits are extremely effective through winter because they stay tough on the hook and release plenty of scent. Long, thin bait strips usually outperform bulky baits because flathead attack prey headfirst.
Soft plastics are deadly during these cooler months, especially when worked slowly with a lift-and-pause retrieve. Most strikes occur as the lure sinks back toward the bottom, so always stay alert for subtle taps or line movement.
Winter flathead fishing in Port Stephens, especially around Tilligerry rewards patience and precision. Fish slowly, stay mobile, and focus on tidal movement, and you’ll consistently find quality fish throughout May and June.
