Bream Fishing Tilligerry Creek – Why Local Anglers Love the Run-Out Tide

by Arthur Smiley on June 27, 2026

Ask ten local anglers where they learnt to catch bream and chances are Tilligerry Creek will get mentioned more than once.

The creek system winding through Lemon Tree Passage, Mallabula and Tanilba Bay is home to healthy numbers of bream all year round, but winter is when some of the better fish start showing up around oyster racks, deeper bends and mangrove edges.

One of the biggest mistakes visitors make is fishing too much water. Around Tilligerry Creek, less is often more. Find good structure and fish it thoroughly.

Our favourite spots include:

  • Oyster leases along the main creek channels

  • Fallen timber near mangrove edges

  • Creek bends with deeper water

  • Weed edges on the last half of the run-out tide

For lure anglers, lightly weighted soft plastics in natural colours consistently produce results. Motor oil, bloodworm and pumpkinseed colours are local favourites.

If bait fishing is more your style, brined baits, fresh prawns and live nippers continue to outperform most alternatives.

Local Tip

When the water gets clear during winter, downsize your leader. Dropping from 12lb to 6lb or 8lb fluorocarbon often turns lookers into biters.

What Locals Are Saying

"Picked up six solid bream around the oyster racks on the run-out using 2.5-inch plastics. The fish weren't smashing it, but every bite counted." – Steve, Tanilba Bay

"Tried three different spots before settling on a deeper bend in Tilligerry Creek. Ended up with my best bream of the season." – Mark, Lemon Tree Passage
