Adventure Awaits Right Outside Your Door - Lemon Tree Passage Winter School Holidays

Everything Your Family Needs for Outdoor Fun, Just a Short Stroll Away — Everyday These Winter School Holidays in Port Stephens 'Hidden Gem'

G'day families!

If you've just rolled into town for the winter school holidays, I wanted to personally say welcome.

Whether you're set up at Aspen Koala Shores Holiday Park, staying with the grandparents, or tucked into a rental somewhere, I reckon you've picked one of the best spots on the coast for a proper family adventure. I've been here long enough to know great spots to pump for yabbies, drop a line or sheltered areas to explore in a boat or kayak and am here to help if you need sone local tips.

Now, let's talk about today. It's looking a bit patchy out there — partly sunny right now with rain chances hanging around through the day.

The good news is there are breaks in the weather coming, and in my experience, a bit of rain never stopped a good school holiday adventure around here. Some of the best family fun happens because of the wet weather, not despite it.

When the Sun Pokes Through: Get Out on the Water

The moment that weather break arrives, grab the kids and head down to the foreshore. Lemon Tree Passage is famous for a reason — I reckon the sheltered waters here are perfect for:

  • Yabbie pumping on the mudflats around low tide — nothing gets kids more excited than the "squelch and suck" of a bait pump doing its thing
  • Crab hunting in the flats — turn it into a treasure hunt, see who can spot the most soldier crabs marching across the sand
  • Kayaking along the calm waters of the Passage — even little paddlers can manage it with a grown-up in the boat, and the views back towards Tanilba Bay are gorgeous between showers
  • Bush walking around the foreshore reserves — rug up, splash in a few puddles, and let the kids burn off some energy in the fresh, salty air

My advice? Keep an eye on the sky and pounce on those clear patches — even 30-40 minutes of sunshine is plenty of time for a proper yabbie pump session, fishing or a paddle around the bay. And the best part is, wherever you're staying in Tilligerry Peninsula, all of this is just a short walk, bike or drive from your door.

When the Rain Rolls Back In

Don't pack it in when the clouds return — that's just the cue to shift gears, not stop the fun. In my house, a rainy afternoon is the perfect excuse for:

  • Board games and card games back at your accommodation (pop in and see me — I've got a few option if you didn't pack any!)
  • A cosy movie session while the rain patters on the roof
  • Sorting and cleaning the morning's yabbie and crab haul, ready for tomorrow's fishing session
  • A drive around to check out the local shoreline and jetties, rain and all — some of the best photos happen in sketchy weather
